Conquer the Summit: Mt. Ashland Hill Climb

The race with one of the most continuous elevation gains among hill climbs in the United States.

Every June, athletes from across the country gather in Ashland, Oregon, for one of the most exhilarating (and gnarly) endurance challenges in the region—the Mt. Ashland Hill Climb. This iconic race in the Pacific Northwest offers participants a unique opportunity to ascend from the heart of downtown Ashland to the summit of Mt. Ashland. The race requires some serious grit to finish and is a celebration of the local trails and community.

The Mt. Ashland Hill Climb: A Legacy of Endurance

Established in 1978, the Mt. Ashland Hill Climb has become a cornerstone event for trail runners, hikers, and mountain bikers alike. Spanning approximately 13.3 miles, the course challenges participants with a staggering elevation gain of over 5,600 feet, starting at 1,900 feet in Lithia Park and culminating at the 7,500-foot summit of Mt. Ashland.

The race is renowned for its demanding yet rewarding route, which transitions from paved roads to shaded fire trails and concludes with a steep single-track ascent. This climb is second only to Pikes Peak in terms of continuous elevation gain among hill climbs in the continental United States.

The Mt. Ashland Hill Climb has seen some of the top trail running legends over the years including Max King, who has held the course record since 2010 (1:41:50), Ashland’s very own Hal Koerner & Jenn Shelton, Erik Skaggs, Joe Gray, Ian Torrence, Tim Olson, Stephanie Howe, David Laney, Cole Watson, Karl Meltzer and Camelia Mayfield who holds the Women’s Course record since 2015 (2:07:00).

Mt. Ashland: A Natural Playground

Mt. Ashland is not only a formidable challenge for racers but also a cherished natural landmark. The mountain is home to Mt. Ashland Ski Area, a community-focused, non-profit ski resort offering diverse terrain for winter sports enthusiasts. In the summer months, the mountain transforms into a haven for hikers, mountain bikers, and nature lovers, with trails that meander through the lush Rogue River National Forest.

The Pacific Crest Trail also skirts Mt. Ashland and sees host to thousands of hikers from around the world pop out from its trail throughout the summer months.

The summit provides panoramic views of the surrounding Siskiyou and Cascade mountain ranges, making it a rewarding destination for both competitors and casual adventurers.
